I cannot overemphasize how important it is to take good care of our eyes. Especially when I have a daughter who has been seriously myopic since 5 years old, I feel it even more. While I can minimize Joey’s time on watching TV or playing gadgets that can aggravate her myopia, there is still a considerable amount of time that she spends on doing her homework and reading everyday. So the best thing I can do is to ensure that she does everything in good lighting conditions. Apart from that, there are other tips i can share with you on how to take good care of our eyes and the eyes of the little ones at home:
1. Select books that are made of non-reflective materials with large, clearly printed letters.
2. Do not read books while lying on your stomach or back. It’s best to sit up straight when reading.
3. Select desks and chairs that are well-suited to your height.
4. Working on the computer can easily tire your eyes, so limit usage to 30 minute period.
5. Maintain a 30-40cm distance between your eyes and your reading material.
6. Install a protective screen on your computer to prevent reflected light.
7. Utilize stands and indoor lighting when reading. If you do not use them, the difference between direct and indirect light can cause blurred vision.
8. The light reflected upon the entire desk should be equally distributed.
9. Do not read inside a moving car.
10. After an hour of reading, take a 10 minute break.
11. Maintain a minimum 2m distance when watching television programmes.
12. Keep a straight posture while watching television programmes.
13. Avoid staring for an extended period while watching television programmes. Make a conscious effort to blink.
14. Perform eye exercises after 30 minutes of watching television programmes (eg blink, look afar and eye rotation etc).
