Restaurant Recommendation: Siam Society

Food Tasting Invite

We were recently invited for a private food tasting session at Siam Society (Our first time reviewing a Thai restaurant), and we were literally blown away by the dishes. In a good way, definitely, in case you were wondering. Upon reaching the restaurant, I was first fascinated by their modern and contemporary take for their interior decor, yet maintaining the original shop space’s external facade. Such an interesting contrast!

The shop used to be a hair dressing salon AND a provision shop - Love the vintage signboards!

The interior decor’s simple and cosy. The little details such as the colorful glass bottles that lined the ceiling, vines overhanging above our heads and the all-white mosaic counter were all very pretty.

Brought the kids along because the boss assured me that there would be dishes suitable for the kids. I usually associate Thai food with spicy and sour food, so I was looking forward to see what they would serve up for the kids.

Our friendly waiter recommended their must-try dishes from the menu and there were so many of them! Seriously, almost everything sounded nice, so he promised to make smaller portions so that we could try more dishes. The first to come were our drinks – In my opinion, these were all drinks you cannot miss ordering at a Thai restaurant: Young coconut, Thai Iced Milk Tea & Iced Lemongrass!

The dishes were served to our tables one by one rather quickly, and before we knew it, we filled up 3 tables of delicacies! It was really quite a sight, because every dish was colorful, looked delectable and extremely delicious! We couldn’t wait to dig in!

Let me introduce our Siam Society Thai feast to you dish by dish. Those marked with an asterix (*) are MUST-TRY DISHES!

CLEAR TOM YUM SEAFOOD SOUP *
$10.90 (S)/ $16.90 (L)

The soup was spicy, sour and sweet, with abundance of fresh seafood in it. Definitely a great appetizer at the beginning of the meal. Who eats at a Thai restaurant without trying their Tom Yum soup, anyway??

BEANCURD SOUP
$9.90 (S)/ $15.90 (L)

For kids, or those who cannot take spices too well, you can opt for the Beancurd Soup, which is a hearty and wholesome soup with lots of beancurd and vegetables. I love this soup so much because it tasted exactly like how my Peranakan nanny could cook it when I was a little girl. So nostalgic, and reminded me so much of the kind old lady. :)

PRAWN CAKE BALLS *
$11.90 for 8 pieces

These handmade cake balls are bite-sized and packed with so much flavors in every bite. Have them with the Thai sweet sauce served with the dish! Very delightful and addictive.

PINEAPPLE FRIED RICE *
$9.90 (S) / $16.90 (L)

If you are a fan of pineapple rice, you HAVE to try this. Both my mother-in-law and I think that this was the best Pineapple Rice we’ve tried so far. Every mouthful bursts forth with the fragrance of the pineapple – It takes a lot of skills to be able to fry such a good plate of fried rice! We enjoyed every bite of this.

IMG_9805

YELLOW CURRY PRAWNS
$17.90

This is a dish that matches so perfectly with steamed white rice. The sauce is only very mildly spicy, and you can taste the spices used in the curry sauce. Comfort food in the highest level.

IMG_9810

THAI STYLE MORNING GLORY *
$8.90

Love this dish! The belachan was so fragrant and added such a spicy punch to the whole dish.

IMG_9822

MIXED VEGETABLES
$8.90

This was primarily ordered for the kids because they wouldn’t be able to enjoy the spicy morning glory. This is a colorful mixture of greens with carrots and mushrooms – An all-time favorite of the kids.

 IMG_9811

DEEP FRIED GARLIC CHICKEN
$11.90

This was a nice dish, but I wish they added more garlic to it. The chicken chunks were fried with a sweet sauce (maybe honey) and tasted pretty appetizing.

 IMG_9815

DEEP FRIED PORK KNUCKLES*
$34.90

This is one of the main signature dishes at the restaurant, and is a must-order if it’s your first time visiting the place. The pork knuckle was marinated in Siam Society’s special sauce for one whole day before it was deep-fried to crispy perfection. Yet, the moisture and tenderness of the meat was maintained. It was so good!

IMG_9817

WEEPING TIGER
$24.90

This plate of Sirloin Beef was served with a special sauce created just for the dish. We were told that this dish was so good that the tigers started weeping after they tried it, thus its name. =P

IMG_9819

SWEET BASIL MUSSELS *
$15.90

I like this dish very much! The soup was so fragrant and bursting with the aroma of lemongrass. I am sure by now, you would have realized that I am a fan of lemongrass. :) The mussels were fresh and the soup was so good with its spicy and sour flavors. Totally whet my appetite!

IMG_9824

STEAM SEABASS IN CHILLI LIME *
$31.90

This is an absolute must-order. The seabass was so fresh and sweet, and the sauce they drizzled over the fish was just perfect. Masked any fishy smell or taste there might be, and very hearty when eaten with rice. This was my mother-in-law’s favorite dish!

IMG_9827

GRILLED SQUID *
$15.90

The husband is a big fan of grilled squids, so we had to order this to try. It looked simple but it tasted extremely delicious! The squids were cooked in perfect timing and had a hint of barbecue aroma when you bite into it. Very yummy indeed!

IMG_9829

MANGO SALAD
$9.90

The mango salad is served with belachan chilli on the side, so you can decide how spicy you want your salad to be.

IMG_9840

MANGO STICKY RICE *
$7.90

The mangoes were super sweet and the glutinous rice was very well-cooked: Chewy and sticky. This would make a perfect end to a sumptuous meal.

The next time you are thinking of having a Thai meal, consider Siam Society. It was probably one of the best Thai meals I’ve ever had, with really reasonable prices as well. I would certainly recommend this place for families and big groups of friends. Thank you, Siam Society, for your warm hospitality and for serving up such delicious dishes. We had such a good time, that you bet I’ll be back again soon. :)
