The Rainbow Loom Craze

When the rainbow loom craze hit Singapore, I had some doubts in my mind immediately: Why would some rubber band twisting be so addictive? Would my kids enjoy something so tedious and time-consuming? Would they even know how to make all the complicated designs??

I did not mention about this rising craze or anything pertaining to rainbow loom in my house, in hope that my girls will never hear of them. That’s of course, just wishful thinking on my part. Before I prepared my heart for it, the girls heard about this wonderful creation called ‘Rainbow Loom’ in Church and in their schools. The bugging started, and to cut the long story short, I relented.

I went to Qoo10 and bought our first rainbow loom storage box complete with colorful rubber bands, looms and charms, all for less than $20! When I saw the box, I could almost understand why boys and girls alike were going crazy and addicted to it. Nobody can resist such vibrant colors, seriously!

Then I did the unthinkable – I made my first rainbow loom. Like everyone, all I did was to switch on my Youtube and searched for ‘Rainbow Loom tutorials’ and I got thousands of videos to choose from. After my first looming experience, I could fully understand why it was addictive, because it is!!

This is a fishtail design, by the way.

Since the girls were both interested in rainbow loom, I ordered another box of bands and looms so that the three of us could share. This was what Joey did to her box after a couple of weeks. =.= She said it’s easier this way, and I cannot understand why.

Nevertheless, Joey has been attempting many different designs by following tutorials on Youtube, and it amazed me that such a hyperactive girl like her can sit still for hours looming, without making a single sound! That alone convinced me that rainbow loom is an ingenious invention.

Joey’s proud creations, after giving away many to her friends and mine. =P

Jayne may be younger in age, but she is just as interested in rainbow loom. Granted, she could not manage the difficult designs or follow the Youtube tutorials, but with just the simplest technique, she created many bracelets and necklaces for her friends and teachers in school. Pretty awesome eh? :)

I think rainbow looming is such a healthy and wholesome hobby that encourages creativity, color-matching and patience. For the younger kids, it is certainly good for training their motor skills as well. Love it! :)
