Review of Crizal Prevencia Lenses

Product Review

My mum and I were casually chatting the other day, and she told me that she hasn’t changed her spectacles for more than 5 years. I was SHOCKED! As a person with myopia since young, I know very well how important our spectacles are and how it is necessary to go for annual eye checks and update our specs regularly. 5 years is unacceptable! And I chided myself for not noticing it earlier. Terrible daughter I am. Then I remembered that I was recently offered a sponsored pair of spectacles by Crizal, so I requested for them to sponsor a pair for my mum instead. They kindly agreed, and I brought my mum to Nanyang Optical at Bishan Junction 8 for her eye check the same week.

She tried on many lovely frames and settled for this one with a pretty bow. =)

I’ve always been fond of Crizal lenses. Since I was sponsored my first pair a few years ago, I’ve never gone back to ordinary lenses. There are simply too many good qualities about it that makes a Crizal lens user stay loyal to it. Apparently, Crizal just got even better with the launch of Crizal Prevencia Lenses by Essilor. With their breakthrough light scan technology,  Crizal Prevencia lenses are the first preventive spectacle lenses in the world to offer selective protection against harmful blue light and UV rays that can lead to Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)and cataract.

The truth is, harmful blue light and UV rays are everywhere. They can be emitted by the sun, as well as by artificial light sources, such as LEDS, blue light is part of visible light and is close to UV on the light spectrum. There are good and bad blue lights – The good ones help us to perceive colors and forms. A certain form of blue light known as Blue-Turquoise light is used as a natural form of light therapy to aid in balancing our sleep cycle and keeping us energized and alert.

However, recent research by Essilor and the Paris Vision Institute, one of Europe’s largest eye health research centres, confirms that a specific band of blue light is harmful to our eyes. After two years of intense and comprehensive research, the joint team identified Blue-Violet light as the portion of the visible light spectrum that presents the biggest risk of causing gradual degeneration of retinal cells, potentially leading to serious eye conditions. This is especially relevant to our generation because of our high daily usage of LED-based equipment such as LED lights and LED screens of smartphones, tablets and laptops, which have all been shown to emit larger proportion of blue light as compared to the old incandescent lamps and fluorescent tubes.

The battle against irreversible eye conditions such as AMD and cataracts affects everyone. These conditions affect more than 350 million people around the world, a figure that may double in the next 30 years as the worldwide population ages. However, more attention should be directed to children, and adults above 45 years old, as they are particularly vulnerable to the dangers of light.

Crizal Prevencia Lens is a new category of preventive lenses which filters light selectively via the following ways:

1. By letting beneficial Blue-Turquoise light to pass through
2. By filtering out harmful Blue-Violet rays that can contribute AMD
3. By filtering out UV that are a major cause of cataracts, from the front and back side of lens, at an Eye-Sun Protection Factor (E-SPF) of 25
4. While maintaining the transparency of the lens, ensuring an optimal visual experience for prescription glasses wearers

Very glad that as my mum’s eyes’ natural defence system is weakened over time and is more susceptible to the harmful effect of Blue-Violet light and UV rays, she now has a good pair of spectacles fitted with Crizal Prevencia lenses to protect them. She’s really happy with her new spectacles! :)
