Safari BOO! Halloween At River Safari

Media Invite

Finally, somebody realised that Halloween ought to be fun and merry, and not scary and unkid-friendly! I know the origins of Halloween, but to me, it’s nothing more than an opportunity for the little children to dress up in the wackiest costumes ever, and gets truckloads of sweet treats! In the past many years, I’ve always hesitated to bring my kids to any Halloween events because they usually go home feeling traumatized and too scared to sleep at night. Thanks to River Safari for finally planning a kid-friendly Halloween event, so the kids had a ball of time!

For me, it’s a rare treat too because it’s my first time to River Safari (for the kids as well!), and seeing the place at night gives it a uniquely mysterious feel. Mind you, the River Safari is usually not open at night, so if you’d like to see it when dusk falls, Safari Boo is the only chance to do so!

The kids were thrilled to receive Halloween hair bands and hats, and couldn’t wait to wear them. At the entrance, we met some dressed-up characters who were smiley and friendly, so for once, the kids didn’t have qualms about posing with them. :)

The whole Safari Boo programme can be categorized into 4 main parts. During the first part, we had a walk-through at the River Safari and checked out all the interesting animals and sea creatures. Our tour guide also gave very useful information about the animals along the way, and it was really educational for the kids.

As you can see, the fishes at River Safari celebrate Halloween too by decorating their homes with little ornaments. :)

It’s our first visit to River Safari, so you can imagine our excitement – Everything looked new to us!

This school of fishes look like they were swimming upside down. =D

Our girls called the guide ‘Harry Potter’ because she looked like she was dressing up as him. =P

Part 2 of Safari Boo is a ‘River Talk’ segment by the river banks, where the audience can get up, close and personal with some really interesting animals at the River Safari. Love how the organizer weaved in the Halloween theme by dressing up the zoo keepers as Mummy, witch, Frankenstein, etc. Of course, they were all very friendly and smiley - Totally not scary at all! I really enjoyed this segment because the animals that appeared were not the usual animals we would see at other animal shows we’ve been to. There were owls, hedgehogs, snakes and raccoons! Very exotic, isn’t it??!

After the show, everyone waited to take photographs with the friendly characters and their exotic animals! My fav was the owl – So quiet and wise-looking!

At the next part of the programme, the kids had a chance to learn interesting things about animals at various Activity Stations. In particular, there was a touch-and-guess section where the kids put their hands into a black box and touch the mysterious item inside. Very brave of them, I think! =P

The 4th and final segment of Safari Boo was probably the one that would thrill many kids because they would receive many sweet treats! As they walked through this Enchanted Trail, they would meet different fairies and characters who would give them little toys and candies. It’s a No-Trick-Only-Treat zone!!

The trail ends at the Manatee Tank, where you can indulge in the dreamy world of huge sea creatures and divers who would appear with a big banner for your finale photo taking!
