Art By A Three-Year-Old

Like most three year olds, Joey loves to doodle. She spends a lot of her time at home coloring, drawing and doodling. She colors really well for someone of her age but she seldom draws objects or pictures of her own. In fact, the weird thing is that she only draws 2 objects – SPIDERS & SUN.

And her spiders always have 1001 legs. Scary.

Something like the one below. I drew it to show you what her spiders usually look like. Coincidentally, her sun also looks somewhat like this, except that the lines don’t penetrate as deep into the round mass, if you know what I mean.

Then it came upon me a realization that the reason she only draws those 2 objects is because I’ve shown her how to draw them before. Of course, I’ve shown her how to draw a million things before, but these 2 were obviously the easiest to pick up.

And so, in an attempt to expand her doodling portfolio, I decided to do a step-by-step drawing lesson with her today. Simply put, I will show her stroke by stroke how to draw a picture, and she will follow me step by step. Since she learns best by imitation, this should be a effective way to impart to her my awesome drawing skills, no doubt.

I decided to draw a simple picture of a house and a tree since those are the stuffs I doodle inside my textbooks when my boring lecturers go on and on last time during my school days.

My picture.

No bad at all eh? I think Joey has good control of her hands, and she managed to draw out a decent picture. In the process of coaching her to draw, I also kept using the names of shapes like square, triangle, rectangle, etc. It helps her to learn how to draw the shapes properly as well.

A budding artist perhaps? :)

P/S: The words on the pictures were obviously written by me. Just in case you were wondering. =)
