A Tale Of Wishes Come True At Seletar Mall This Christmas!

Media Invite

Christmas is indeed the most wonderful time of the year!

Everywhere we go, there is a happy vibe in the air and I especially love stepping into shopping malls during this festive season because there are great sales going on, happy Christmas carols playing and lots of interesting and fun programs happening! Everywhere you turn to, there are smiling faces and generally everyone is gearing up for a good year-end break. This Christmas, Seletar Mall has so much to offer to everyone so it’ll be a real pity if you don’t make a trip down!

IMG_2832

We popped by Seletar Mall last weekend and were totally immersed in the joyous Christmas mood. They have an array of fun programs all planned out for the whole month of December!

GIANT TOY CAPSULE MACHINE!

IMG_2843

Look at that stage design! Can you tell that it’s a giant toy capsule machine?! There were so many people queuing up for their chance at the toy capsule machines and the whole stage area was bustling with excitement as the giant balls rolled down to determine the prizes won! There are four tiers of prizes to be won, with the highest tier being SPH Malls vouchers – Of course everyone wants to try! All you need to do is to spend a minimum of $20 for a go on the Sir Little Giant Toy Capsule Machine to win SPH Malls vouchers and prizes!

IMG_2868

KIDS’ GAME STATIONS!

But what got the kids really excited were the game stations. But of course, the stations had such cute designs and names - even I felt like playing! =X So, there were 3 different game stations that the kids could try – Pobo, a mini basketball game; Delphy, a snow bowling game; and Pinkie, a game of colours. All were simple games but it was obvious the kids had great fun playing and laughing even when they did not manage to win anything. That’s the spirit of Christmas, I guess – It’s all about having fun and enjoying the atmosphere of love and joy, while making your wishes come true!

6 Reasons To Book Your Vacation Accommodation On Traveloka

One of the biggest challenges when planning for a vacation to a place you have never been to before is finding a good accommodation. There are so many factors to consider, quite frankly – The price, accessibility to facilities and places of interest, service quality, F&B standard etc. When it’s our first time visiting that country/place, we tend to be quite clueless about which hotel to choose and in which location. I used to spends days and weeks scouring through websites after websites, blogs after blogs, just to read different people’s experiences and take reference from their recommendations but the whole process is extremely tedious and time-consuming. As life gets busier by the day, that has become really difficult for me. That is why nowadays, I tend to tap on the service of a site such as Traveloka Malaysia, where I not only get to search for a list of hotels but also get to compare them in terms of price, location and reviews of different customers from all around the world. All these information would make it easier for me to pick and choose a suitable accommodation for my vacations.

image

Why Traveloka?

1. Convenience
Traveloka provides an all-round solution for your holiday needs – You can search and compare prices for air tickets and hotels in Southeast Asia all in one place. Saves time and hassle – great especially for busy moms like me! Plus, I get to read all the reviews of the guests who had stayed in those hotels before and decide for myself whether I would have a good experience in that hotel as well. Having everything in one place makes it easy for me to navigate and get the information I need.

2. Best Price
Because of the nature of the service, prices are very competitive across the board, and the ultimate people who benefit from this are the consumers like you and I! Nobody wants to pay any more than they should for a vacation!

3. Honest Price
I absolutely detest marketing strategies where hidden costs are only revealed right at the final stage – by then you are all hyped up by the excitement of booking a holiday that’s affordable only to be slapped with extra costs that would dampen your mood. At Traveloka, what you see is what you pay. No worries about hidden costs, ever!

4. Secure Online Transaction
Security and privacy of your online transaction are protected by RapidSSL authorized technology, and you will receive your e-ticket or hotel voucher directly in your email. Safe and secure, so no worries!

5. Extensive Search Results
Comparing cheap flight tickets and hotels has never been this easy. Find top hotels from budget to 5-star, and brands such as Tune Hotel, Ibis Hotel, as well as airlines like Malaysia Airlines, Malindo Air, Tigerair, Firefly, AirAsia and many more. Take for example, I was searching around for hotels in Port Dickson for an upcoming family vacation, and I stumbled upon Avillion Admiral Cove Hotel, that has great reviews from past guests. If I had not searched on the website, I would not have known that such a good hotel exists!

6. 24/7 Customer Service
They can be contacted via email, phone or live chat. Bookings can also be easily managed online, including refunds! This is so very important to me personally because I get frustrated when my queries are not addressed and I get directed and redirected everywhere and still not get the answers that I need. Giving customers ease of access and contact is a sure sign that the company cares for the needs of their customers.

Hop over to Traveloka to check them out now!

“I Have The Power” Face Mask Design Competition

Advertorial

One of the most common ailments among Singaporeans is the Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) which includes cough, cold and flu, and as parents, we also have to find ways to protect our kids against such viruses so that our lives don’t get disrupted all the time. While environmental factors are not within our control, there are certain good hygiene practices that we can teach our kids so as to prevent germs from spreading, especially among their classmates in school. These good practices should not be new to you – They are simple things such as remembering to wash hands regularly, avoid sharing of food with others who are sick and of course, wearing a good grade face mask when down with a cough or cold.

IMG_1971

Following the successful launch of I have the POWER Face Mask Design competition in 2015 (which we participated in!), Xepa-Soul Pattinson and ADEZIO Allergy & Cold Relief are doing this again this year, and I thought it was an apt time for me to revisit this again with my kids, and reiterate the importance of good hygiene practices. Simple personal hygiene practices can go a long way in ensuring that my kids don’t fall sick because of germs and viruses, and since they spend a huge portion of their time everyday in school where I cannot monitor them, the only way is to educate them to know how to be responsible for their own hygiene. Plus, we had lots of fun colouring the face mask together!

IMG_1972
IMG_1974IMG_1981IMG_1986IMG_1987IMG_1989IMG_1991

This year’s best entry wins a grand prize of a LG Pocket Photo Printer PD251 worth S$150. There are also five S$20 Roys-R-Us vouchers to be won. To participate in the competition, follow the following steps:

1. Like and share the competition post found on Allergy Cough and Cold Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/allergycoughcold/?fref=ts)
2. Follow the link available on the competition post on Facebook to download the competition photo.
3. Design the mask together with your child and cut out the artwork.
4. Send the picture of the mask, pictures of your child wearing the mask along with the completed entry form to
contest.participation@gmail.com by 31 July 2017.

* Contest is open to children residing in Singapore of age between 6 to 12 years old. Other terms and conditions apply, For more information on the competition, please visit https://www.brand-incorporated.com/uncategorized/children-face-mask-art-design-competition/

Live Savvy With Cybersecurity

Advertorial

We are now living in a world where online transactions have become such a common and integral part of our daily lives that we sometimes wonder how we managed to get our lives in order  in the past before internet came into existence. This advancement is certainly a good thing – We can get many things done online conveniently and efficiently without even taking a step out of the house. However, there is a potential danger that comes with such convenience – Security concerns. I think this is especially true for Singaporeans, because we are so used to the safe and secure country we live in, that many Singaporeans have become complacent and unguarded when it comes to potential threats lurking online. The truth is, online threats transcend geographical boundaries and if we are not careful, we can easily fall prey to malicious attacks and suffer a lot of damage.

That is exactly the message that Cyber Security Agency of Singapore aims to send out when they launched their first National Cybersecurity Awareness Campaign at the “Live Savvy with Cybersecurity” roadshow last month at Toa Payoh Hub. The campaign was launched by Guest-of-Honour, Minister for Communications and Information and Minister-in-Charge of Cyber Security, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim on 11 February 2017.

IMG_2048

The roadshow cum carnival aimed to raise awareness of the importance of cultivating good cyber hygiene to better secure online activities, in turn protecting against cyber criminals. I visited the roadshow and was impressed at the turnout. To many people, online activities such as banking and shopping are not new but perhaps like me, they are not so clear about the good practices that everyone should have in order to secure everything that they are doing online.

IMG_2021 IMG_2025IMG_2040 IMG_2035 IMG_2037 IMG_2045
Cybersecurity sounds like a very complicated concept to me, but at the roadshow, I was pleasantly surprised that the concepts were presented in a simplified and easy-to-adopt manner. Through the use of six zones for members of the public to complete activities to win a prize and eventually the grand prize after completing every zone, the messages of cybersecurity were communicated in bite sizes so that both the young and old can understand easily.  Highlights include a “SavvyCheck” trivia station to test one’s cybersecurity knowledge, a shooting gallery-style game for participants to “take-down” known cyber threats; and a quiz for participants to gauge their cyber-savviness level and garner customised tips on cybersecurity. Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? Great effort on the part of Cyber Security Agency of Singapore, to use such a fun and interactive avenue to get an important message across.

IMG_2050

As a mom, I often thought about how I can teach my kids to be savvy online and aware of potential risks as well. Part of their school curriculum requires them to use the laptop or IPAD to access certain websites for research or complete assignments occasionally.

[clip_image002%255B5%255D.jpg]

Just a couple of weeks ago, my 8-year-old excitedly asked me for our full house address because she wanted to participate in an online survey that would win her the latest model of mobile phone in town. It was a website that she navigated to and a colourful pop-up message came out from nowhere, asking her for our home address, NRIC number and my mobile number! As a young kid, all she wanted was to win a new mobile phone and would naively give all the details they asked for. I quickly sat her down to explain to her that it is very dangerous to reveal personal information online and that she should never do so without telling me. Thankfully, I was able to find out in time before our privacy and safety was potentially compromised. There and then, I realised that as a parent, I have the responsibility to teach my kids about cybersecurity and that it is never too early to do so. I also reminded my kids never to click on flashing banners on websites (yes, they absolutely will click on every banner that looks colourful, is blinking or flashing, or uses words that pique their interest) because that could lead them to malicious websites or download harmful viruses and contents in the background.

Where dealing with cyber threats is concerned, prevention is really the key. Xepa Cares With Allergy & Haze Kit (Review & Giveaway!)

Advertorial

We cannot deny the detrimental effects on our health and lifestyle whenever haze hits us. While I used to be relatively unaffected by the heavy stench of smoke smell hovering in the air previously, the most recent haze incident hit me quite badly. My  eyes started tearing up uncontrollably and I had difficulty breathing if I was outdoors for a prolonged period of time. My kids complained that their throats felt dry and painful and of course, the smell of smoke was perpetually there and we could not even open the windows and doors in our house. There were many friends around me who were hit even more badly because of their medical history of allergies. Thankfully, the haze has left us for now, but as always, we cannot predict when it will hit us again. The best policy is definitely to be always prepared, so that when it really hits us, we are well-protected.

IMG_0562

Recently, Xepa sent over an exclusively assembled Allergy & Haze Kit to help us cope with the effects of haze, should it hit us again. The Allergy & Haze Kit contains the following items:

16-10-26-16-48-45-901_deco

1. Allergy & Haze Handbook
2. Disposable Face Masks
3. Euderm Cream (To replenish moisture to dry, scaly and itchy skin condition and relieve infantile & allergic eczemas)
4. Rinz eye drops (To sooth irritated & tired eyes)
5. Tissue pack (To wipe off surface dust and pollutants)

Of course, if you are feeling really uncomfortable because of the haze, it is best to seek medical help from healthcare professionals such as the doctors or pharmacists. Very often, anti-histamine medications such as Adezio may be prescribed by them to help cope with the allergy reactions. But it is just as important for us to have supplies like those assembled by Xepa, so that we are not helpful when the haze suddenly hits us. Many people do not realize that just a few items like that can help make lives a lot easier.

So, when the haze hits us, what are some of the things we can do to protect ourselves and our loved ones? Here’s sharing 5 useful tips that you may find useful:

Tip #1: Drink lots of water!

Image result for glass of water
(Source: HealthBytez.com)

Water can flush out the haze pollutants (allergens) from our body, which are responsible for triggering allergic rhinitis and affects the respiratory tract, skin and/or eyes. If we do not try to flush out the haze pollutants quickly, we can end up with runny nose, watery eyes and rashes!

Tip #2: Wear A Good Mask!

IMG_0560

Wearing masks is not enough when the haze hits – You need to wear a good grade mask that can block away the pollutants.

Tip #3: Purify Your Air!

Image result for green plants pot
(Source: http://www.popularmechanics.com)

If you have an air purifier at home, it will have to work extra hard when the haze hits. And if you do not have one currently, it might be good to invest in one now – We can always do with purer air, no? Otherwise, grow lots of green plants and let nature do its work! Of course, important to avoid outdoor activities as much as possible, and stay indoors instead.

Tip #4: Shower & Change Often!

Image result for shower
(Source: http://ignorelimits.com/)

Allergens stay on our skin and hair, so it is good to shower and change out of our clothes more frequently during the haze season.

Tip #5: Rinse Eyes & Moisturize Your Skin!

IMG_0560

Eyes are usually one of the first to be affected during haze, because they are one of the most delicate parts of our body. It is important to rinse our eyes quickly whenever  we feel a little irritation so that it doesn’t get aggravated further.

So, let’s not be complacent and only start making preparations when we hear of the haze or when we actually start smelling them in the air. Be prepared with the necessary supplies at home, so that you can minimize the damage and inconveniences caused by haze. It’s that easy to protect our loved ones and ourselves from the harsh effects of haze!

GIVEAWAY!

To help you kick start this journey, I have one set of Allergy & Haze Kit to give away to one reader, courtesy of Xepa. This is an exclusive kit that is not sold anywhere else, so this is the only way to own one! The kit comes with everything you see here in the photo. Participate via Rafflecopter!

5 Things My Mum Said

Advertorial

IMG_1213

Growing up, my mom has always been someone I could count on. She was a good listener and I would pour out my heart to her every time I faced a problem or difficulty in life. Even though she might not always tell me exactly what to do, there were certain advice that she gave me that stuck to me through the years. They shaped many of the important decisions I made in life and made me who I am today. This Mother’s Day, I’m going to share five golden nuggets of advice she has given me. So here goes – 5 Things #MyMumSays:

1. #MyMumSays: “Get Married Young!”

I know this is probably not the trend among the young people nowadays but this is one piece of advice I always give to my friends. I got married at 24 and enjoyed every minute of my married life. My mom used to tell me that getting married young would give us time to get to know each other as husband and wife before plunging into parenthood, which would turn our world upside down. Couples who marry late often carry the burden of the need to have kids quickly because of their age, and miss the opportunity for romance in the initial years of marriage. In her own words, “Stable already, quickly get married la! Wait so long for what?” I’m glad I took my mom’s advice! =D

IMG_9618

2. #MyMumSays, “Don’t Stop At One. Have More!”

You probably know by now why I have two kids. Mum used to tell me that a single child is lonely and in her own words - “Very poor thing!” So after I had Joey, she told me to start planning for a second kid and not wait for too long. I have a younger brother myself, and even though we bickered while growing up, I am extremely glad that I have a sibling. It hit me especially hard when our dad passed away two years ago from cancer. I was glad that I have a brother to share the burden and grief with, and someone who understood what I was going through.

3. #MyMumSays, “Be the Owner Of Your Home!”

My parents were Malaysians and they came to Singapore after they got married in 1977. My mom’s dream was simple – own a four-room flat, to give us stability and a cosy home. After 13 years of renting and moving about, she finally realized her dream and bought her home in 1991, after receiving Singapore citizenship. Ever since then, mom never stopped reminding me to buy my own home. She would always say, “It’s so much easier for you guys now – got CPF to help you what!”

I remember feeling really glad that we could buy our flat and pay off the mortgage using funds from our CPF, because preparing for the wedding almost wiped out our savings. I felt silly for grumbling about the monthly CPF contributions because that was the very fund that helped me get my own home!

image

4. #MyMumSays, “Save For The Future!”

When I just started out in the working world after graduating from the University, I was like every young adult on the streets – splurging on expensive meals, hanging out with friends every night and buying clothes, cosmetics, bags and shoes at my fancy. I would use up my entire month’s salary before the month was up and felt very miserable until the next pay day. My mom knew this and stepped in to tell me that while I didn’t have much burdens or cares at that point in my life, I must think for my future and be prepared for it. She reminded me of the importance of being prudent and to cultivate the good habit of saving.

Now that I am a mom of two kids, I have to be the steward of my family’s finances. When I make big decisions such as buying a new house, there are many more considerations I have to take into account. I used to think that it was good to pay for the entire house mortgage using my CPF so that I have more cash flow on hand., However, as I understood CPF’s schemes better, I realized that apart from ensuring that my housing is paid for, I should also start thinking about my retirement plans. If I use up all the funds in my Ordinary Account to pay for my house, I would be left with nothing in my retirement portfolio! That didn’t sound half as scary when I was in my twenties but as I am approaching my forties, it sure sounds daunting! And I’m glad my mom prepared me mentally for this., “Girl ah, we women must learn to plan for our future. We cannot think of relying totally on our husbands!” That always made me laugh.

With escalating healthcare costs, I also started to realize the importance of ensuring that when the need arises, all the expenses will be taken care of. When I was advised by my financial advisor a few years ago that I could pay for my insurance premium using funds from my Medisave account, it was like an epiphany for me! I immediately purchased my insurance policy and the rest is history. The premium was paid for using Medisave funds and I did not have to fork out any cash at all.

5. #MyMumSays, “Live Within Your Means!”

This was probably the best advice that my mom has ever given me. My mom is a simple woman – all she wanted in life was to have enough for herself and her family, and that everyone would live happily. She believes in living within her means so that the family would not be stressed up by financial commitments and burdens. Because of this belief that she passed on to me, I’ve learnt to do that in my own family. When my husband and I were deciding on what kind of house to buy, we followed this 3-3-5 rule. One of the most common mistakes young people make is to overcommit and that was definitely something I wanted to avoid.

image

What are some of the life lessons that your mom has taught you? On this Mother’s Day, show your appreciation for her by sharing your version of #MyMumSays! I am eternally grateful to my mom for all that she has taught me, and I endeavor to be a mom just like her, teaching my kids the life lessons that I learnt from her. Happy Mother’s Day, mom – Thank you, and I love you forever. :)

7 Best Family-Friendly Destinations for Singaporeans within Southeast Asia

Advertorial

If you’ve been a follower of this blog for some time, I’m sure you know that we are a family who loves to travel. We go on several trips a year just to scratch that travel itch but also because we enjoy the bonding during overseas trips and the new experiences we accumulate along the way. Travelling is one of the best ways to widen our horizons and learn about new cultures.

If you are planning your family travels for the upcoming June school holidays, here is my list of 7 Best Family-Friendly Destinations Within Southeast Asia!

1. Kuala Lumpur

(Image: Tripadvisor)

Malaysia is naturally the first choice because it’s so near to us and travelling time will be more manageable especially for families with younger children. With direct flights there in under one hour, this is one of the best short getaway destinations for Singaporeans. In Kuala Lumpur, your family can have fun at Kidzania KL and Sunway Lagoon or visit the famous landmarks like Petronas Towers, Menara KL Tower etc!

2. Penang

I love to bring my kids to Penang because the culture and heritage is so rich there! Apart from fabulous char kway tiao and refreshing chendol, there are interesting wall murals to snap photos with and many, many cafes to explore! Also, visit Penang Hill, Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, Peranakan Musuem and the Chew Jetty!

3. Bangkok

We’ve been to Bangkok so many times but we still always want to go back. It’s also relatively near to Singapore, accessible by a two-hour flight. Singaporeans flock there because of the cheap food, massages and fashion. My kids love the night markets, foot massages and tuk tuk rides! It’s so convenient to make a weekend trip there and airfares are really cheap nowadays! Plus, there are many kid-friendly attractions there such as Floating Market, Siam Aquarium, Kidzania Bangkok, etc. Read about our adventures in Bangkok here.

4. Phuket

Phuket is one of my family’s most favorite holiday destinations because the whole place is like paradise! On our last trip there, we almost didn’t want to come back! The prices may not be as cheap as Bangkok, but it is not as rowdy and crowded as well. If you want to have a really rejuvenating holiday, Phuket is a choice destination. Furthermore, there are so many kid-friendly resort options there, your kids would be jumping up for joy when they see rooms like this:

Read about our holiday at Phuket here.

5. Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh may not sound like a common family holiday destination but when my family went there a few years ago, we had a very rejuvenating holiday. It was peaceful and quiet, and we didn’t need to rush from place to place. Truth be told, there are not many attractions in Phnom Penh, but it’s family-friendly because the Cambodians are the friendliest people around! Everywhere we went, the people were nice to our kids and some even offered snacks to them. One of my fondest memories at Phnom Penh was the sunset cruise that we took. It was so beautiful.

6. Bali

Bali is yet another destination that I would love to bring my kids back again. We had a lot of fun mingling with the friendly and kind Indonesians and we did hair braiding, visited coffee plantations and had lunch on a mountain. The weather’s cooler in Bali as compared to Singapore as well, so that’s definitely a bonus.

[DSC_0290%255B4%255D.jpg]

7. Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City is yet another exotic and not-so-common holiday destination for families but I thought it should totally be in this list because direct flights there are fast and cheap. Plus, the kids would love the pho and fried spring rolls and adults can enjoy authentic Vietnamese coffee everyday! The streets of Ho Chi Minh City are super clean and the people are a friendly bunch as well. Everything is generally cheap as well, so you can live like a king over there. There may not be much to do in Ho Chi Minh City but it is a very relaxing place for your family to spend quality time together. Just stop for lots of ice-cream breaks like I did!

* * * * *

We all know that travelling as a family is never cheap. This is especially so when your kids are older than two years old, and most airlines charge full prices for them! In order to travel frequently and not get overwhelmed by the travel planning, I go for affordable and economical ways of travelling with hassle-free booking procedures (Think cheap air tickets, cheap hotel stays and fast confirmation of bookings!). That way, I can maximize my dollars and the travel experience as well. Who doesn’t like that, right? If you are itching to book a family holiday now, I’ve got a recommendation!  Traveloka is an online travel booking platform that I’ve just discovered that makes the entire holiday planning process a BREEZE! I make bookings so frequently a year, so you can trust me on that. Good things must share!

Simple and User-friendly Interface

I like how clean and straightforward the website looks. Nothing frustrates me more than a website that gets me searching everywhere for the right button to press! The moment you enter the site, you can start searching for cheap and promo flight tickets in just three easy steps!

image

We are planning a trip to Malaysia at the end of this year because our cousin’s getting married. So I tried searching for air tickets on Traveloka.

image

Within a matter of seconds, these flights were found for me. So quick and fuss-free, isn’t it?!

image

Honest & All-In Prices

Now, I’m sure many of you had been “deceived” when websites show really cheap airfares which are only basic fares without taxes and other miscellaneous costs, only to realize that the final price is much higher than what you thought at the beginning. At Traveloka, you don’t have to worry about that because all the prices reflected have already included the taxes. Just look at the fares for my whole family to Kuala Lumpur – We only need to pay $174.60 in total for one-way to KL, with taxes all-in! What I really like is how honest Traveloka is, and as a consumer, I don’t feel like I need to second-guess the prices and be in fear of what the final price may be!

And this is the final price after I’ve selected both my departure and return flights. Just click on “Book Now” and you’re ready to complete your booking! In case you are wondering – Yes, no hidden credit card charges either! (Yay!)

When it comes to booking my hotel stay for KL, using Traveloka makes the booking extremely simple as well. And similarly, taxes are all included in the price reflected so that I know exactly what I am paying! You can choose to sort the hotels based on prices or popularity, etc. If you are planning a budget trip, sort it by prices from lowest to highest will definitely help in your decision-making. :)

Traveloka Quick

I had one of my best booking experiences ever on Traveloka, and I believe you will too when you explore the website for yourself. Instead of tediously going to every single airline to check prices, use Traveloka to compile everything for you at one glance and make a good decision fast and easy. It’s a godsend for frequent travelers like me. :)
