RWS Original Musical Production: Lightseeker (Tickets Giveaway!)

Media Invite

My little family of four trotted to Resorts World Sentosa last Sunday to catch their latest original musical production, Lightseeker. Thanks to their kind invitation, my kids had their first taste of a large-scale musical and I’m glad they seemed to enjoy themselves, especially when we were brought on a backstage tour to meet some of the main casts and learn how a musical of such a scale is being put together. It’s always great to be able to see the behind-the-scenes, because it makes me appreciate the production even more.

Lightseeker is an original fantasy musical by RWS, with songs by famous local songwriter, Dick Lee and featuring an international cast of West End performers. The story began with the main character, The General, who sought to collect light to boost the power of the Emperor he served. Together with an evil witch (yes, the one with red hair!), they captured different ones and made them slaves.

This quest eventually led him to Nova, whom he believed would be able to self-generate light so that she could keep giving him the light sources that he needed. Nova, however, was able to move him with her sincerity and convinced him to turn from darkness to the place of light.

The production was a gastronomical feast for our senses – From the clever use of lighting to graphics on the screen to create different backdrops and moods, and beautiful songs and brilliant acrobatic moves. At one point, there were performers doing somersaults right above our heads and at another, there were a dozen performers bouncing off 3 huge trampolines in an entertaining dance routine. Pretty interesting even for my kids who might not be able to understand 100% of the storyline, though there were a couple of scenes that had sudden loud sounds and pyrotechnics and gave the kids a fright. Other than that, the kids enjoyed the colorful scenes especially those with great dance choreography and acrobatic stunts. They kept saying, ‘So flexible! So flexible!’ LOL.

After the show, we were brought to the backstage to meet Vivian, the lead cast who acted as the evil witch. She was so friendly and even prettier close-up! It took the kids a little warm-up handshake with her before they dared to talk to her – remember she was the evil witch in the show!

We were then brought to the training hall where the performers practised their moves, somersaults and stunts.

The kids all love the trampoline and wanted to jump on it!

At the backstage area, we found the tri-trampoline structure that was used in the show. This part of the show was really exciting as various performers bounced off the trampolines and performed an interesting dance routine!

The backdrops and props used in the production looked really beautiful when I was watching the musical. Close-up, they looked even more amazing.

So much intricate details on the prop designs – Very impressive!

We also went to check out the basement level right below the stage. This was the area where huge props were kept and where performers or props can elevate to the stage. This was also where the trap door was – Performers could disappear from stage and appear in the audience arena within seconds just by taking the secret passage way! What an eye-opener this was. And very interesting as well. :)

The last two places we were brought to were the costumes and make-up rooms. All the costumes used in the production were designed and sewn in-house. Due to the heavy usage of the costumes during the four months that the production would run, the costumes room would ensure that the costumes were well-maintained.

It was certainly a wonderful experience for us, going behind-the-scenes to see how a large-scale musical production like Lightseeker is being put together. Thanks to RWS for inviting us – the kids learnt so much about musical productions that day!
