School Holidays Special: Our Top 5 Picks For Performances (Giveaway!)

Singapore may not be an arts hub of any kind, but there are performances and shows happening all the time. I enjoy bringing my kids for performances because they like it, and I think it’s a good way to cultivate their artistic talents - Music and dance are their favorites. This school holidays, I’ve rounded up my Top 5 picks for performances that you can enjoy with your whole family. Perhaps there is something that might interest you!

1. The Ant and the Grasshopper

This I Theatre production is a 50-minute musical suitable for the whole family. Based on the famous Aesops Fable, this is a fast-paced and interactive musical with colourful characters, puppets and catchy tunes specially created for the younger audience. The play will explore key themes of friendship, rewards for hard work, how to use your time wisely, balancing the arts, leisure and work, how to work smart, generosity and judging others.

2. Hansel & Gretel – An Eco Adventure

This is Glowsticks’ first musical for children aged between 3 to 8 years old. The show promises to give the family an educational and fun-filled time complete with catchy songs, witty dialogue, beautiful set design and animated puppets. The musical takes the audience through the adventures of Hansel and Gretel, as they befriend the creatures of the forest and set out on their mission to save the flora and fauna from the evil witch. Through the musical, the kids will learn that they must care for the plants and animals in our environment.

3. Lightseeker

This blockbuster musical at RWS is worth checking out – The dazzling lights, stunning acrobatic moves and catchy songs make this a highly entertaining performance suitable for the whole family. If you are a fan of local talent, Dick Lee, you wouldn’t want to miss this musical as he composed all the songs in this production! There is a positive message that comes out of this musical as well – Within everyone, there is a light and hope that shines forth, and darkness can never triumph light.

I did a full-length review of the production here, if you would like to know more about what the show can offer.

Ever since we caught our first Disney On Ice performance last year, the kids have been bugging me to bring them to this year’s show. 5. Rapunzel (Tickets Giveaway!)

“Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair..”

This is a familiar story to many of us, and definitely one that excites my kids! In this musical fairy tale by SRT’s The Little Company, your family can join Rapunzel as she embarks on a journey of self-discovery along with her friends – Think Rapunzel with her long hair, a woeful witch and a prince on pyjamas riding on a crazy camel!

On top of that, the kids will take away from the performance, values about parent-child relationship, friendship and love. Rapunzel looks set to be a wonderful performance packed with great music, drama and arts, and my girls and I can’t wait to catch the performance during this March school holidays. Hope to see you there too! :)
