The Day They Lost Their Grandpa

The first time is always the hardest, I guess. That’s not saying that subsequently, it will be easier. Just that the first time will always be the most painful, heart-wrenching and unforgettable.

The kids lost their grandpa one week ago, and it was our first family funeral. My husband’s father went home to be with the Lord on 24 Apr 2014, and the morning he was admitted into the hospital at 4am, all of us, including the kids, went to the hospital and waited. The miracle that we were praying for did not happen and he left us at 11am that same morning. While the kids may not fully understand what it means, they do know that their grandpa is now in heaven and we will see him again one day.

In the treatment room at the hospital that day, we were asked to see the kids’ grandpa. His blood pressure was low and pulse was weak and he was hanging on for his life. I don’t think I will ever forget how the kids sobbed, while touching his hand and forehead. The youngest one, especially, cried so hard that it broke my heart. She kept saying, ‘Ye ye, ye ye…’ (grandpa). Even little children can feel and understand sadness in their own way.

During the funeral, the kids each drew a drawing for their beloved Grandpa to be cremated together with him. I am touched by how the kids showed their love through their drawings, and I think it’s an important closure for them. I am thankful we are Christians, and the kids have been told since young that when Christians die, they go to heaven and it’s happier and more beautiful over there. To them, Grandpa has gone to a better place and is no longer in any pain.

Both of them drew their Grandpa and wrote his name in their pictures. The kids will always remember their Grandpa as the one who buys them ice-cream, chicken wings and Satay. His loving ways towards them will be remembered for a long, long time.

One of the nights last week, Joey dreamt about Grandpa. She said Grandpa is alive, smiling and very healthy. He is not in pain, sickness or any misery. When she shared her dream with us, we were all very comforted.
