Review: Beauty & The Beast Musical At MBS

Media Invite

The very first musical movie I watched at the age of 13 was ‘Beauty & The Beast’ movie from Disney. I remembered I fell in love with every song in the movie, bought the song track album and I was humming the tunes everywhere I went. I was not the only one who was mesmerized – My whole class was! I was studying in a girls’ school, and every girl in my class wanted to be ‘Belle’ – We dreamed of meeting our ‘Beast’ – with the pre-requisite that the beast must eventually transform into a handsome and kind prince at the end, of course. We would scribble lyrics of the theme song from ‘Beauty & The Beast’ on the blackboard in between classes and burst into mass singing with gusto. Those were happy times!

My fondness for ‘Beauty & The Beast’ continued to grow into my parenting years when my two daughters became princess-loving girls themselves. When I heard that ‘Beauty & The Beast’ musical was coming to town, I couldn’t contain my excitement! I had to go watch it! I was not sure whether the songs were going to be from the original Disney movie, but there was no question about it – I had to catch the musical!

And so, I did. It was such a happy evening as I soaked myself in the beautiful tunes and familiar songs – Yes, they sang all the songs from the original Disney movie, with a few other new compositions added in. I was so surprised that I could remember most of the lyrics! It was almost as if I had gone back in time to when I was 13 years old, sitting there and couldn’t stop grinning to myself.

Seen by more than 35 million people, the original Broadway musical spectacular is coming to Singapore for the first time! Based on the 1991 Academy-Award winning animated feature film where it premiered on Broadway in 1994  and ran for 13 years, the show's original Broadway creative team have now reunited after 20 years to re-imagine the international tour  of Beauty and the Beast and bring this Broadway classic to life.

I was most mesmerized by the voice of ‘Belle’ – She has such a beautiful and crisp voice! It was sheer pleasure listening to her perform every song to perfection.

The musical had a tiny edge over its animated predecessor though – Some humor was added in and there were many parts during the musical when the audience bent over in laughter. The ‘candle stand’ character in the musical was one of the funniest guy that night, in my opinion, with witty lines, funny expressions and silly actions. The audience went ‘Awwwwwww…’ when the little boy acting as the ‘tea cup’ in the musical transformed back to be a real boy after the spell was broken. :) The whole musical was not only magical, it was highly entertaining as well. I am sure if my kids had gone with me, they would enjoy it as well because they’ve watched the original Disney animation movie before.
