KOREF: Five Rural Experiences For Kids

In May this year, our family visited KOREF in Kahang Malaysia to do a filming for a children’s edutainment series – Fresh Farmers. The series has debuted on TV and you can catch it on Channel 8 every Sunday 10am. I’ve delayed the post till now because Joey’s episode was screened last Sunday. Here’s the link to watch it if you have not seen it. :)

The trip was a “working” trip for Joey and Isaiah, but for Jayne and I, we were just there to have a vacation and laze around. Haha! Speaking of which, KOREF is a really rustic place and a great experience for urban Singaporean kids, in my opinion. There is no air-conditioning, water heater or comfortable beds. In fact, I was a little taken aback at how rundown the rooms were. But that’s the deal about KOREF – It’s a retreat back to the very basic. We may not have the luxuries we were used to back home, we had a great time as a family in the short 2D1N we were there.

KOREF was so picturesque that many friends asked where we were when I shared photos on Instagram. =P

1. Chasing The Fishes

The moment we arrived, the kids got all excited about the fish pond and had so much fun chasing the little fishes while we were waiting for our room to be ready. I like the place already! =D

The yellow wooden hut was where we stayed at, along with several other families. :)

Almost everything is free-of-charge at KOREF – Just step into a wooden boat, or a raft and sail away on the waters. Don’t worry, the water’s really shallow (until my knee only) and it’s a protected catchment area, so you won’t drift too far away unknowingly. Every where’s within the boundary of the resort.

2. Crossing Wooden Bridges

To get to our hut, we had to walk on wooden link bridges – Another fun thing for the kids! I was more amused by how they were painted.

Our humble room and a lovely chill area outside where the kids gather everyday.

3. Playing The Swings

One of our favorite activities at KOREF was this – Swinging over the waters!!

It was so much fun, and we spent hours on it! And where can you find this in Singapore?!

4. Riding The Rafts

While Joey and the husband were filming, Jayne and I went water rafting! It was a slow and leisure ride on the waters – So relaxing! =D

5. Feeding The Pets

The kids also had lots of fun with the animals at the farm. They would feed the chickens and rabbits with vegetables provided at the farm and talk to them like friends – So cute! Again, something that urban Singapore cannot offer.

KOREF is actually an organic rice plantation – the reason why Fresh Farmers was filmed there as well. I love the vastness and greenness of the place! If you visit that place, you can also request to try your hand on planting rice – It would be a great experience for urban kids too! Perhaps, they would then finish every single grain of rice on their plates from then on, knowing how tough it is. =X
