The husband and I love musicals, so when we heard that famous Broadway & West End musical – Chicago – is coming to town, we knew we had to go catch it on their Gala Opening Night!
Based on real life events back in the roaring 1920s, nightclub singer Roxie Hart shoots her lover and along with cell block rival, double-murderess Velma Kelly, they fight to keep from death row with the help of smooth talking lawyer, Billy Flynn. The synopsis sure sounds dark, but it was nothing like that at all! There are so many things I love about Chicago that I can probably go on and on, but I’ll just give you 3 reasons why you absolutely should go catch this classic musical before it finishes its run in Singapore!
1. The Script Is Hilarious
Yes, I’m serious. And this is probably why you should still go catch it even if you are not a fan of musical or anything remotely artistic in nature. The scriptwriter or whoever wrote the lyrics of the many numbers presented during the musical is just ingenious and witty. The audience were roaring with laughter at various segments of the musical because the script was just too good and the cast presented it perfectly with the right tone, body language and facial expression. It was certainly not dark like my initial first impression – It was funny and most certainly, a choice option for a date night with your spouse.
2. The Cast Is Crazy Talented
And I mean every word of that. I entered Sands Theatre with an expectation for an extremely high quality production and even so, I was astounded over and over again by how talented every member of the cast was. The singing was flawlessly on pitch with great emotion portrayals; the dance moves were extremely well-coordinated and every line was delivered in perfection. The main leads each had several segments where they were mostly performing solo and every single one of them wowed the audience with their meticulous moves and vocal power. So many lyrics, moves and long script to remember – How did they do it to such perfection??!
And did you see that live orchestra in the background? They were amazing – Every song and background music was performed so well and blended into the whole musical flawlessly. In some parts, they were even involved in portraying certain emotions and funny bits of the musical, which left me mostly speechless. Too good.
3. There Is An Element Of Surprise Waiting For You
And of course, I won’t say what it is to spoil it for you. You’ve got to go catch the musical to see it for yourself. All I can say was when the surprise was revealed (all in 2 seconds), it left many in the audience with their mouths half opened - I was one of them. That was just, plain ingenious. This is therefore not a typical musical – expect to be surprised and definitely entertained in many ways.
I wouldn’t say that this is a family-friendly entertainment option because it is definitely more suitable for adult viewing due to some violence and sexual references made during the musical. I recommend that you go for it with your spouse on a date night out – It is by far, one of the best musicals I’ve watched so far, so I am sure you’ll enjoy it.
