Picking Up Fast

Finally, my baby has reached the stage where she is picking up new words real fast every single day. Every day, I hear her say some new words I don't know where she picked up from, but it's also encouraging to know that she is paying attention & absorbing everything we adults say.

Just a few days ago, I brought her to the bedroom and lay her down to drink her milk. After she finished her milk, she picked up her bottles and walked out of the room towards the kitchen, chanting, 'Wash! Wash!'

She is also situationally bilingual.

She brings containers to us, asking us to '开!', '开!'

But when she wants something to be closed, she would say, 'Close' instead of '关'. Someone ought to tell her that  '关' is her surname, and she should learn to say it soon. =P

When we bring her into the bedroom at night to sleep, she would chant, 'Sleep', and then 'Noooo' when she realise we are really trying to put her to sleep. Then she would go say, 'Nite Nite' to her Pooh bear and Barney before putting her head down to rest.

This morning, we were watching Sesame Street on the TV, and she suddenly turned to me and said, '饭'. I thought I heard wrongly, so I asked her if she really wants 饭, and she nodded her head and said,  '饭', mum mum (to reiterate to me that she wants to eat  饭). I dutifully went to scoop some  饭 into her little bowl and brought it to her. She looked so happy & started to tuck into her  饭. What is the world coming to? I have become a maid?!

I am starting to wonder what makes her learn the english word, and which ones in mandarin? It should be dependent on which we say more right? We speak singlish so much that in one single sentence, we mix both language and switch in between like nobody's business. I am starting to worry that she might not say one complete sentence in proper english or mandarin. Scary.

This morning Joey was eating her rice, and she was sitting on the table, then on the floor, then on the sofa, and my MIL just uttered, 'aiyo, 你很麻烦’. The next thing we heard Joey say was '麻烦’.

Gosh. Reality hits me.
