Visiting the Science Centre is like visiting the aquarium, zoo, discovery centre & water playground all at one location. I think it’s just about the best place to bring your kids during this June school holidays!
Joey & I visited the Science some time back because the nice folks at Science Centre invited us for a IMAX movie at Omni Theatre & the Planet Shark exhibition. After the guided tours, we were told that we could roam the rest of Science Centre if we liked, and of course we did just that!
Between Science Centre & the Omni Theatre is an open air discovery zone. Focusing on the laws of physics, this whole area was built with stations where you can learn & discover for yourself, what laws are at work around us in our daily lives. Very interesting, I say! Especially for a pre-schooler like Joey, she was very interested to find out the reason why the ball moved from a lower position to a slightly elevated position. Even I learnt a thing or two from this open air exhibition area! =D
A simple pulley system…
… and Joey learnt that by tugging on the rope tied closer to the end of the plank, the weight at the other end ‘felt’ lighter! This was of course talking about the centre of gravity law. Joey may not fully understand, but explaining it to her made me feel and look smart! Haha!
Another exhibit that demonstrated the centre of gravity law.
This Echo Tunnel lets you shout, scream or rant all you want into it, and the echoes come back to you in an instance. Good for those who want to let out some air after a bad day at work, LOL!
And this was what I was mentioning earlier on. By pushing the bowling ball, it moved from a lower position to a slightly elevated one. The reason was due to momentum, which is kinetic energy passed from the hand to the ball and due to law of inertia, the ball would keep rolling on. =P
As we entered the Science Centre, we went to the eco life section first. Joey loved watching the fishes swim in the tanks. Some of the tanks were really beautiful and pleasing to the eye. =) I must say that the exhibits were child-friendly as well. They were mostly at Joey’s eye level and she had a fun time exploring the different tanks and trying to find the fishes/creatures described.
Inside the Science Centre, there was a mini playground and Joey was so excited to see it. Like I’ve said many times, playgrounds never fail. I had to drag her away to see the rest of Science Centre! There was still so much more to explore!
I remember with fond memories that my favourite part of the Science Centre when I visited as a kid was the chick-hatching. Then, there were different incubators showing eggs at different stages of hatching. It was fascinating! Joey loved it too. =D
The Pop Culture section talked about sound and radio waves. Joey tried to fiddle with every single exhibit! I was just following her around!
Now, my favourite section of the Science Centre during the trip was the Visual Science section, where there were interesting exhibits on visual distortions. It was so much fun!
A duck or a rabbit??
A cat lying down or a hamster staring at you?
Head on a platter?! That was Jayvon, our friend whom we met at the Science Centre. =)
The electric chair!!?
The finale of our trip to the Science Centre had got to be the Waterworks. This is an outdoor ‘exhibition’ which teaches kids about the uses of water as well as important facts about water. To the kids, it was a mega outdoor water playground! SOOOOOOOO many kids were all donned out in swimsuits & having a great splashing time!!! Joey was waiting for this moment all day!
What a fun & fulfilling day it was. I think we have an awesome Science Centre here in Singapore! =D
