Thanks to the kind folks at Science Centre, Joey & I had an extraordinary outing last Friday!
We were invited to the screening of the latest IMAX movie at the Omni Theatre – Hubble. To be frank, I was very apprehensive about watching the IMAX movie with Joey. Knowing what a scaredy cat she is, I was worried she’d be scared by the loud sounds during the movie and how big the screen would be. As expected, she nearly refused to go into the theatre with me! I had to keep coaxing her and explaining to her that it would be a fun experience. I even had to promise her that we would leave after 5 minutes if she found it too frightening. But if we did that, it would be a real wet blanket. I love going to the Omni Theatre!!
Thankfully, even though Joey was a little scared at the beginning, she soon started to enjoy the movie. =) It was a documentary about the legacy of Hubble – the world’s first space-based observatory and space telescope, and how the astronauts went on missions to repair the Hubble when it was faulty. We were brought on a visual journey through the galaxy and because of the large screen, we actually felt like we were transported through the Universe! It was such a feast for all my senses, I must say! And as I stared at the stars and vast galaxies, I sat there feeling very in awe and amazed at the wonderful creation of God. The Universe is massive and huge beyond words can describe. Joey kept asking me if we were flying! Haha!
The whole viewing experience was fabulous. It was definitely a 3D experience of a different league. I was told by the Science Centre personnel that Omni Theatre had recently undergone upgrading works and their latest screen panels and technology allow for a seamless viewing experience, which means even though the huge rounded screen was made up of many smaller panels, you cannot see the lines at all when the movie is played. I saw it with my own eyes! It was true!!!
The best part was Joey was intrigued by everything that was shown during the movie. She kept asking me about every detail in the movie, and I had great fun explaining what I know to her. It was a great time of mother-daughter bonding. We went ‘wow’ together when the space shuttle broke through the sky into the galaxy. We laughed together when they showed how the astronauts ate their sandwich – The ham and bread were just floating in mid-air! We grabbed each other’s hands tightly when the astronauts were trying to repair the Hubble and kept failing. Because the screen was so big, the experience felt very real, as if we were in it! Both of us walked out of the theatre feeling very happy we watched an interesting documentary. =D
After the Hubble, we were brought to the Planet Shark, Science Centre’s temporary exhibition from 16 April to 21 August 2011.
Planet Shark is a fascinating journey into the world of the shark. It is a story of evolution, of form and function and of the significance of the shark in our world. Planet Shark guides visitors through the murky myths and fascinating facts which have surrounded sharks for centuries. Featuring explanations and examinations of almost every aspect of the shark, from evolution and biology to popular culture and the fin trade, visitors will gain a whole new level of respect for the ocean’s oldest and most effective predator. Too bad no photography is allowed in the exhibition. But one of the exhibits that really amazed us was a huge shark which was frozen at –20 degrees Celsius and preserved. Really amazing. We also saw lots of shark fossils and many types of teeth of different sharks! The kind personnel from Science Centre also walked us through the exhibition and explained along the way. Both Joey and I learnt so much about sharks! =D
Thanks Science Centre for this educational and fun experience! =)
