We had an Egg-mazing Easter celebration on Saturday at the Jurong Bird Park! It frankly exceeded my expectations – We signed up for the Behind-the-scenes tour at Lory Loft which was supposed to last only 30 minutes, but the guide took us through a comprehensive close-to-one-hour tour which taught not just the kids, but the parents as well, many interesting facts about the lories. And of course, we could not leave without completing the Easter Egg Hunt! A very fruitful morning spent at the Park, I say!
The tour begun outside Penguin Coast, which was just at the main entrance. We took a walk with our guide to the Lory Loft, and along the way, she explained about the different species of birds we passed by. A personalized tour is always nice, and the kids could ask whatever questions they have.
My favorite blue bird of all time – She is gentle and not afraid of people. Every time I walk through their enclosure (its species has a walkthrough enclosure for us to come up, close and personal with them), they will walk right out into our paths.
One of the reasons why I signed up for this class was because we would get to visit the restricted area where only Keepers can access – the back kitchen, where the lories’ feed is being prepared.
Our guide took us through a short lesson on the different types of parrots in the world, their diet, male & female differentiation etc.
We saw and touched specimens (made from real birds that passed away) – It was intriguing!
Then the kids got a chance to prepare the feed for the lories when we enter the Loft later. The feed’s easily made – Add honey to water and special lory’s feed (made up of different grains) imported from overseas. We even tasted the feed by dipping our little finger in – It tasted like barley water!
The kids were all excited to start feeding the lories in the Lory’s Loft!
I think it’s really fun that there is such a catchment area for the lories to come close up to the kids, and enjoy a feast from cups on their little hands. It’s no wonder the Lory’s Loft is many people’s favorite place in the Jurong Bird Park.
These lories are really pretty and colorful – So many colors on one tiny body! Amazing creation of God.
After the lories’ all fed, we hurried back to the entrance of the Park because the kids wanted to start their Easter egg hunt!
The egg hunt basically brings you through the entire Bird Park, with clues telling you where the giant eggs are. At certain stations, the kids had to complete tasks given by the station masters in order to receive stamps and chocolate eggs, while other stations only required them to answer questions and write them on the egg hunt map.
It was all in good fun – the kids searched for the giant eggs, learnt more about birds and collected more chocolate treats in the process.
We had a really fun time at the Jurong Bird Park, and definitely learnt more about birds and eggs – Love excursions where the kids have fun and can learn something useful at the end of it! Thanks Jurong Bird Park for the invitation – Looking forward to the next Easter’s program! :)
