Have your CNY Reunion Dinner at Gu Ma Jia Private Kitchen!

Media Tasting

My favourite time of the year is coming very soon and I was so stoked to be able to have my first Lo Hei experience this early! I’ve heard so much about the delicious dishes offered at Gu Ma Jia Private Kitchen, but missed all the previous food-tasting sessions. So glad the husband and I could finally make it this time round, and it was for their Chinese New Year menu! Happy to report that we were not disappointed – even with high expectations, every dish was delicious and yummy!

The first dish that greeted us was of course the colourful Prosperity Yu Sheng ($40.80/$50.80), which was not only pretty to see but refreshing, sweet and very appetizing. I super LOVE IT! The Yu Sheng was served with gui fei abalone (I was secretly pleased because I don’t take fish sashimi, haha!) and the mix of sweet and tangy sauce along with the rest of the crunchy ingredients made this a very balanced dish. I had helpings after helpings because it was just so appetizing and refreshing!

This next dish made everyone ‘wow’ when it arrived, and rightfully so. This Lobster Cold Platter ($138) of lobster, thai-style pacific clam, smoked duck and Gu Ma beancurd was not just visually appealing, it tasted really fresh & yummy too! I especially like the beancurd – Praiseworthy!

This next dish of Lychee Sweet & Sour Grouper (Market Rate) was one of the highlights of the evening for me personally. I love how perfectly the lychees matched with the sweet & sour grouper. The fish was extremely fresh, tender and sweet! Super well-done dish!

Apart from the CNY menu, we also tasted some of Gu Ma Jia’s signature dishes. When this dish of Assam Fish Head was served to the table, it caused a wave of excitement at my table, especially for those who had tried it before. It was indeed very delicious and might be one of the best assam fish head I’ve ever tried. The sauce was flavourful with just the right tinge of spice and sourness. The fish was very fresh with firm meat and paired well with eggplant, tomatoes and lady’s fingers. So good with a bowl of steamed rice!

The Kyoto Pork Ribs was a show on its own because it was lit up with fire just before served to the table. Tender pork ribs are served in aluminium foil to retain the juiciness and natural flavours of the ribs. Drenched in sweet tangy sauce, the dish is sweet and savoury at the same time.

The fragrance of this dish of Claypot Wine Chicken with Ginger & Sesame Oil totally won me over when it was served. It’s one of my favourite dishes and Gu Ma Jia’s rendition was yummy! Imagine tender chicken chunks with fragrant ginger and sesame oil!

Just when you thought that vegetables cannot get any more interesting, this dish of Kai Lan 2 styles (Yuan Yang) was so good I couldn’t stop eating it. This dish features Kai Lan vegetables cooked in two styles, blanched and fried. Crispy Kai Lan leaves are deep-fried to perfection, coupled with thick and crunchy Kai Lan stems. I super duper love the fried Kai Lan leaves – So savoury & good!

We were served vinegar enzyme drinks along with our meal, and it was so interesting and refreshing! Enzymes act as catalysts for the human cells to function. The body‘s ability to digest, absorb and utilize nutrients depends on the presence of enzymes. Having the drink alongside the meal aids in our digestion! Concluding the wonderful meal was a Double-boiled Beautifying Peach Gum with Red Dates ($32.80) which was sweet and really nourishing!

Celebrate CNY With Wo Peng Cantonese Cuisine! (Media Review)

Food-tasting Invite

Chinese New Year is my most favorite festival in a year. The reunion meals, excessive steamboat sessions, red and huat everywhere and the joyous faces I see, all make me feel really happy. Every year, I look forward to many lo hei with family and friends, and the sumptuous Poon Choy of course! I have to say that while many restaurants offer different versions of Poon Choy, not every one is delicious or worth the money. Last weekend, my family was invited for a food tasting session at Wo Peng Cantonese Cuisine to try their CNY offerings as well as their signature dishes, and we had a great time. I love savory food with strong flavors and that’s exactly what I got that day.

Wo Peng Cantonese Cuisine is conveniently located in Furama City Centre Hotel. I love the traditional feel of the restaurant that makes you feel like you’re in Hong Kong. Such restaurants always promise good food!

My all-time favorite dish is usually the first dish to be served. The sweet & tangy taste of this dish makes it a perfect appetizer! Wo Peng’s Lo Hei uses vegetarian raw salmon slices, crispy fish skin & crackers, so you can feel assured enjoying it. I guess in view of recent incidents, many restaurants would be substituting their raw salmon with abalone or vegetarian options. I am personally not a fan of raw salmon so I don’t eat them. These vegetarian ones taste like firm jelly with a good texture and goes really well with the whole dish. Apparently, that’s what they serve to vegetarians in Japan too!

Absolutely love the idea of crispy fish skin in Lo Hei – It’s ingenious! And adds such a nice crunch to the whole dish. :)

Let 2016 be a year that we prosper and huat in every area of our lives!

Next up, a huge pot of Poon Choy was served to our table!

Look at that abundance of abalones, scallops, prawns, mushrooms, sea cucumbers, fish maw and dried oysters! Every one at the table could not stop smiling while savoring this dish. So savory, flavorful and tummy-happy! Wo Peng is very generous with their portions, so you can be assured that your family and friends will enjoy this dish tremendously together.

The next dish was a Chicken Soup with cordyceps flowers, black garlic, wolfberries and herbs. This soup is really healthy and wholesome, and there’s a surprise inside the chicken!

The chicken’s stuffed with glutinous rice! =D

This next dish was interesting. It’s Sauteed Peach Resin with Egg White and Green Vegetables. I’ve never seen peach resin or tasted them before, but apparently, they are very high in proteins and collagen! They are tasteless, but adds a unique touch to the dish with its agar agar-like texture.

This is what dried peach resins look like!

This next dish was a crowd-pleaser. Even the kids couldn’t stop eating it. This Smoked & Roasted Duck with Camphor & Tea Leaves was first smoked, then roasted, infused with tea leaves. Slightly crispy on the outside and succulent on the inside – Yummy!

We also enjoyed this last dish before desserts were served. The Wok-Fried Glutinous Rice with assorted sausages was delicious, fragrant and filled with generous ingredients. Very hearty and a total comfort food!

Desserts was a plate of fried Nian Gao and carrot cake. Love the nian gao – So soft and sweet! What better dish to end off a CNY food-tasting than this? :)

Check out what Wo Peng has to offer for this upcoming Chinese New Year!
