The Top 5 Essentials

Now, don’t we all agree that the most fun part about having a baby is the crazy and indulgent buying of stuffs for your cutie pie??

Especially if we are talking about Baby Number 1, right after throwing away the pregnancy test kit, the mummy-to-be dives irrationally into the dazzling world of oh-my-God-so-cute booties and caps, all kinds of practical and not-so-practical clothes and innovative equipment that promises to make our new-found lives easier. It doesn’t even matter whether the baby’s a girl or a boy, just buy everything in whites, yellows and greens first.

When it comes to Baby Number 2, 3, 4 …… n, the mummy somehow gains some common sense and makes more necessary and less impulsive buys. We buy only what we really need, based on our experience. But, what are the things we really need? I’m not talking about disposable diapers and milk bottles & powder. Those are not essentials, they are must-haves!! Apart from those, check out my list:

KLESSIS’ LIST OF THE TOP 5 ESSENTIALS

1. DIAPER BAG

A Coach diaper bag – Would you want to put baby’s soiled pants inside?

This is important. Get 1 with lots of different compartments, pockets and sections. It should allow retrieval of different items at just one zip. A good diaper bag should be able to contain every thing you need for baby outside of the house, and yet easy to carry around.

2. CAR SEAT

This is of course required by law if you own a car and would like to drive your baby around in it. However, more than allowing your child to have a safe car ride, the car seat is fabulously useful. It can be used as a rocker when your baby is bored and as a Moses’ Basket for the baby to sleep in restaurants so that the daddy & mummy can eat in peace.

3. WET TISSUES

This is a God-send when you are outside, and baby decides to poo all over her diapers and when you open up, you not only get a smell fest, you also get a backside full of smeared yellow sticky you-know-what. Wet tissues clear the sh*t plus wipe the backside clean. Not only that, wet tissues can be used to wipe toys before the baby plays with it, wipe the baby’s face and hands and basically clean up every dirty situation (which happens at a frequency of once every 10 minutes).

4. CLOTH DIAPERS

Although most people don’t use cloth diapers with safety pins anymore, they still prove to have many other functions. I have 20 such pieces at home and I use them all the time. When baby was just a newborn, I wrap her up like a cocoon with it. I also use it as a headrest for the baby in the cot so that the face doesn’t have direct contact with the mattress cover (which I change only once in 2 weeks). It can also be used as a security blanket for baby to hug to sleep. It can also be used as a very thin blanket when it gets a little chilly. Best of all, when I’m outside, I drape it over my shoulders and let baby burp on it. Even if she throws up milk, my clothes stay clean (which is important to me as well as the people around me). How multi-functional & useful!

5. PACIFIER

pacifier

I know many parents frown on this one, saying that it would make the baby’s teeth crooked and lips pouted. I say, those are very tolerable damages in order to keep the mummy sane. Plus, it may not even happen. The pacifier is the single most important invention for parents. It not only calms and soothes the baby, it also calms and soothes the mummy. What’s not to love about a pacifier??!

There you have it, my top 5 essential baby items. :)
