Ping’s Thai Teochew Seafood Restaurant (Review)

Media Invite

When the husband and I went to Bangkok recently with our friends, we were thrilled to be invited for a food tasting at Ping’s Thai Teochew Seafood Restaurant. We heard raving comments from our blogger friend, Stranger In Bangkok, on their food and were really excited to try it for ourselves. So glad it did not disappoint, and we already decided that it would one of the restaurants we would bring our family when we visit Bangkok again. :)

Ping’s is conveniently located inside Pathumwan Princess Hotel (which is right next to the popular MBK shopping mall in Bangkok), so you don’ have to worry about finding it. And this signboard? Hard to miss. :) They have another outlet (in fact their first and original outlet) at Asoke as well.

See the smile on the husband’s face? He loves seafood and couldn’t wait to taste the dishes, obviously!

Before the main dishes were served, we were first wow-ed by this refreshing and cooling drink –Coconut smoothie! No preservatives, water or sugar was added – Just pure coconut water made into an icy smoothie. It was SO GOOD especially in the hot and humid weather in Bangkok, and a superb appetizer. We were all ready to attack the main dishes after that!

The first dish served to our table was Ping’s signature dish - Braised Fish Maw & Crabmeat in Broth. The broth was so flavorful and thick, and absolutely delightful. Every mouthful was full of the flavors of the exquisite ingredients used in this dish. I am not even a fan of fish maw, but I could not resist finishing my bowl of broth. It was satisfaction right till the last drop. This is a must-order when you visit Ping’s.

We were also served a similar version but with shark’s fin this time round. Sorry to those of you who embrace ‘No fins’ campaign, but I really do enjoy a good bowl of shark’s fin, though only on special occasions. This version from Ping’s was flavorful and naturally sweet with the taste of crabmeat and mushrooms in every mouthful. I absolutely love it! I would recommend that if you have more guests sharing a meal together, you can order both the fish maw and shark’s fin versions to share. Otherwise, just opt for one because the two dishes taste similar.

More fish maw dishes were served – The Fried Fish Maw with Prawns is another of Ping’s specialty dishes. It was my first time tasting a dry fish maw dish and it was surprisingly good. The texture resembled that of dried beancurd and matched well with the fresh prawns.

Crab Cakes is always a hearty and delicious dish, and at Ping’s, they were served piping hot, yet lightly battered.

This Deep Fried Oyster Omelet on sizzling plate was a crowd pleaser. The oysters were big and juicy and because it was served on a hot plate, it was still sizzling hot with a wonderful char when we enjoyed it.

Next up, we were presented another of Ping’s specialty dish – Braised Goose Web & Noodles in Claypot. Before you think that this is just another pot of braised noodles that we often see in Singapore, it is absolutely not. First of all, goose webs are not common and these were specially imported for the dish. The noodles were soft and chewy, infused completely with the sauce. This is one hearty dish. For those who love chicken feet, you would inevitably enjoy this dish as well.

We were craving for vegetables after so many meat dishes, and this came just in time. The big and sweet fresh added a touch of freshness to the dish, and it was overall very tasty.

Ping’s specially arranged for us to enjoy this dish of Curry Crabmeat and it was so yummy! It was so easy to enjoy crabs this way because all the flesh had been extracted for us, and we could dip our mantou in the spicy sauce as well. Pretty similar to the Chili Crab dish that we have in Singapore.

Our final main dish was this Prawns with Vermicelli in Claypot. I absolutely love this dish because it was slowly braised for a long time with lots of ingredients beneath the pile of vermicelli and prawns. There were shallots, onions, ginger, baby scallops, etc, and the flavors were infused in every bite. Such a wonderful dish!

We began the meal with a wonderful coconut smoothie, and ended with an equally splendid Chilled Coconut Jelly! This was so very good and the best way to end a meal at Ping’s, in my opinion.

Thank you, Ping’s for hosting us for such a wonderful meal. We will be back again when we visit Bangkok the next time!
