The Creepy Frogs

I love to eat frogs’ legs, but I have to admit these things look really creepy. Green slimy skin. Bulging eyes. Long pointed fingers. Yucks!

I shudder just looking at them. It takes every ounce of me to resist running away from the cage. Especially when it’s just before dinner time.

My girl, on the other hand, thinks they are fascinating. She looks at them with great interest while chanting, ‘Froggy, Ohhhhhhh Froggy!’ The people around us were all amused by her apparent interest in the creepies.

No matter how many times we asked her to come back to the dinner table, she just kept staring at the frogs and kept up with her chants. I was so afraid she would lean so near that the frogs would scratch her face!

While I was observing Joey, I was suddenly reminded that kids just have a very simple appreciation of things around them. Especially of things that the big people don’t care for anymore.

As we grow up, we shed away that simplicity and innocence bit by bit. What used to excite us during our Primary school days no longer appeal to us now. What used to be a great deal now seems so insignificant. For many people, the main source of their pleasure and happiness come from the material possessions and the pursuits in their careers. None of those are bad or wrong. But I just want to remind myself in the midst of this hectic life I live, not to ever lose the innocence and inquisitiveness of a child. It is a child-like faith that pleases God. I want to keep my heart pure. I want to keep my intentions right.

Just like how Joey appreciates and enjoys even the smallest thing in her life. Her complete embrace of life is manifested in how she would take time to touch the mimosa she saw along a pavement, run after the little birds or chat with the neighbor’s cat at the corridor. Life should be so simple, yet colorful.

Actually, the frogs are quite cute. Errr….. right?
